I can still remember the smell of the pages from my favorite books growing up as a child, I still love that smell. To this day there is something about children's books that I cannot escape. My fascination runs deep within the pages of my beloved books of my childhood. Subconsciously I draw inspiration from these adolescent experiences. My inspiration come from Edward Gorey, Dr. Seuss, and the two books my Mom read to me on a regular basis, Dorrie and the Blue Witch and Eva and the Red Balloon. My weapon of choice as an artist is printmaking and I will be graduating this may with a BFA in Printmaking as well as a BA in Theatre.
Upon entering the University of Iowa I thought I was going to study painting. That suddenly changed when I took a printmaking class and fell in love, although I continue to paint. Much of the mediums of printmaking are represented throughout my work such as Lithography, Intaglio, Monoprinting, Silkscreening and Relief. Monoprinting is a great way for me to juxtapose painting and printmaking together. My inspiration within the narrative of my work comes from Commedia dell' arte, carnivals, amusement parks, small fuzzy animals (especially squirrels), puppets, urban legends, superstition and old photographs. I have also obtained my inspiration through my love of theatre. Theatre has been a vital part of my vision within my work. In my pieces I do a lot of costuming, masks and disguising which is a key element in a theatre production. I think my experiances over the years in scenic painting and design have played a key role in where my work is today. My goal as an artist is to fuse my love for fine art and theatre together. Within the freakish sideshow of characters, I have tried to create a sense of humor contained within the walls of the paper. A lot of the work you see on my website comes from my warped imagination and the ideas behind the Circus and "freakshows". |
